    Line 6 Wireless (XDV-70 & XDV-30)

Many of my clients have been pulling their hair out over the wireless frequency spectrum reallocation that the FCC has recently just pushed through.  It’s been pretty tedious these last few years trying to figure out what was going to happen, but the dust seems to be settling for now.

The problem?  ”For Now” is truly the operative word in that sentence.  You can bet that the FCC will be forced to take a look at the remaining frequency space before too long as the airwaves become saturated with wireless information for all kinds of digital devices that are being cooked up right now.

    The XDV70 and XDV30 Systems

    The XDV70 and XDV30 Systems

Although this may be a bad situation for people who use wireless microphones for sound reinforcement, or video and audio recording we have to understand that we are in the minority on this.   What companies were involved in purchasing the space?  You may have heard of them…Google, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, AT&T, Verizon and even more.

I love it when we can turn a bad situation into a win/win situation for everyone involved and luckily, that’s exactly what Line 6 has done.  They purchased a company called X2 Digital a few years back.  At the time, they were primarily known for their guitar and bass instrument wireless.

They were known for instrument wireless because in a digital system you don’t have any companding whatsoever.  That means that the signal going in doesn’t have to be compressed or squeezed to fit in a certain frequency spectrum.  In English, that means that your wireless microphone can now function like the microphone you plug directly into your board or preamp.

The Line 6 system will also feature Microphone Modeling.  Line 6 has always been known for their ability to model microphones, preamps, and guitar products, but now they’re incorporating it into their wireless system.  They knocked it right out of the park too.  It did an excellent job at modeling an SM58, Shure Beta microphone, Audix, Sennheiser, and Electro-Voice microphone.

The best part of all of this information is that you’ll be able to use 12 of these systems at one time anywhere in the world.  This is because the system operates in a “Global Band” if you will @ 2.4Ghz.  The fact that this works on the 2.4Ghz band is going to keep you same from future FCC rulings so if you’re a school or a church that can’t afford to shell out $10,000 on a wireless system every 5 years then this is a big deal.

    What’s microphone modeling?
A microphone model is a digital reproduction of the sonic characteristics of a specific microphone. Line 6 is the recognized world leader in digital modeling technology. Our patented modeling technology is often imitated, never duplicated.

Tell me about XD-V70 and XD-V30′s microphone models.
XD-V70 features 7 mic models. 6 of them are inspired by the sounds of many of the world’s most popular live-sound mics. Our own L6-DC7 mic model is the culmination of all the other mic models – it combines all their best characteristics. The models are based on*:
    Shure® SM58®
    Shure® Beta 58A
    Sennheiser® e 835
    Audio-Technica® AE4100
    Audix® OM5
    Electro-Voice® N/D767
XD-V30 features one mic model, inspired by* Shure® SM58®.

What’s the battery life of XD-V digital wireless systems?
Each XD-V digital wireless system delivers up to 8 hours of continuous usage from two AA alkaline batteries (included).

What are the polar patterns of XD-V handheld microphones?

XD-V30 and XD-V70 feature cardioid polar patterns, which are recommended for vocal applications. They feature excellent rejection of unwanted ambient noise.

Why is it better to broadcast in the 2.4GHz band?

There are a lot of reasons. For example, the 2.4GHz band is immune to interference caused by high-powered sources like TV stations, public safety broadcasts, and cell phone towers. Analog wireless systems are susceptible to this aggressive interference, even at distances of over 150 miles away from the high-powered transmitter. Since XD-V channels are not susceptible to interference from high-powered sources, the same channels can be used in any geo-location.

WiFi networks operate in the 2.4GHz band. Will that be a problem?
No. No. WiFi transmissions will never appear in your audio signal. The digital wireless systems know not to “listen” to WiFi information. Think of it like this: When you’re on the 2.4GHz WiFi network at your local coffee shop, do you receive other peoples’ emails? Each person receives data that’s encoded and intended for them. This is because digital devices ignore information they don’t recognize.

Are XD-V digital wireless systems road worthy?
Yes. Each system features rugged enclosures, can be operated license-free around the world, and provides channels that are always available.

    XD-V30
    6 channels always available
    Polycarbonate transmitter body
    Polycarbonate desktop receiver chassis
    Internal antennas

    XD-V30L
    6 channels always available
    Polycarbonate beltpack transmitter
    Polycarbonate desktop receiver chassis
    Internal antennas

    XD-V70
    12 channels always available
Metal transmitter body, polycarbonate antenna cover
    Metal 1/2U receiver chassis
    Internal transmitter antennas
    Built-in loop-through antenna distribution system

    XD-V70L
    12 channels always available
    Metal beltpack transmitter
    Metal 1/2U receiver chassis
    Internal transmitter antennas
    Built-in loop-through antenna distribution system
Why only 6 or 12 channels? Analog wireless systems can offer thousands!
Because “channel count” and “available frequencies” aren’t the same thing. XD-V digital wireless systems can be relied on to offer ALL their channels all the time, anywhere in the world. Just power up, pick a channel, and go. Analog wireless systems may claim to have thousands of available frequencies but good luck getting more than a handful to operate together. You’ll need the help of a professional RF wrangler, a ton of expensive equipment, and a lot of luck.

Are all digital wireless systems the same?
Not all digital wireless systems are created equal.

Some digital wireless systems still use companders, which results in reduced dynamic range. (Systems with lower dynamic range require users to adjust pads and gain.)

    What about latency?

What about it? XD-V digital wireless systems have extremely low latency (about <4 ms), which is about the time it takes for sound to travel 4 feet.

    What’s included in the box?
XD-V30 includes a microphone transmitter with cardioid capsule, desktop receiver, two AA batteries, and protective case.
XD-V30L includes a lavalier microphone with tie clip and windscreen, beltpack transmitter, desktop receiver, two AA batteries, and protective case.
XD-V70 includes a microphone transmitter with cardioid capsule, protective microphone storage case, mic stand clip, 1/2U receiver, rack hardware, antennas, antenna front-mount kit and accessories, and two AA batteries.
XD-V70L includes a lavalier microphone with tie clip and windscreen, beltpack transmitter with protective storage case, 1/2U receiver, rack hardware, antennas, antenna front-mount kit and accessories, and two AA batteries.

Is it possible for the Line 6 XDV-70 to interfere with a video signal running through a cat5 cable? We just hooked up 3 Line 6 handhelds for use in church and suddenly the projection has horizontal interference. I replaced the cat5 cable running from the computer to the initial projector with a vga cable and all is well but we want cat5 so we can do longer runs. Can the mics be the cause and what is the cure?

      • Video Helper

As a video professional running vga via cat5, even with the proper baluns, is a less than ideal scenario.  A better scenario would be to use a properly sheilded vga cable and a line driver.  The output of most computer video cards aren’t strong enough to drive cable lengths more than 50 feet but a proper line amplifier and shielded cable can drive cable lengths in excess of 250′ without any problem.  The other option would be to use a digital signal chain and driver.  I’ve used several DVI to fiber optic adapters that work great over extremely long distances.  Check out Markertek or Full Compass.

Thanks so much. Sounds like we will stick w vga.

      HI,

Thanks guys for giving information about Line 6 Digital Wireless Microphones.

I purchased the Line 6 XD-V70 mic about three weeks ago and found it well constructed however seriously lacks the audio qualities I prefer. I have been singing in one band or another for about 32 years. I used the Line 6 mic during practices and the other members did not know I switched from my Audio Techinca AT2010 to the Line 6, I guess they never looked at my mics. Anyway they asked if I had a cold etc when I was using the Line 6. I switched back to the Audio Technica AT2010 one evening and they said, “you really brought your voice tonight Dan”. Nothing changed except the mic. In my opinion this is a highly over priced mic and the simulated mics on this product could not even come close the the response of my $80 Audio Technica AT2010. I am returning it today.

Mr. Sloan rocks!! Thanking you for taking my call. It is so refreshing to still get top-shelf customer service. Happy holidays, and thanks again.

Hey BlackBurst, it definitely does work. However, you won’t be able to take advantage of the microphone modeling when you switch out their proprietary capsule. That may be why they don’t push it that much. To be honest, I think their capsule sounds as good if not better than a standard Shure capsule. Of course that’s just my opinion.

      • Mike P

        Hi Ryan,

I bought the XD-V70 after reading your excellent review. I love the sound quality of the mic but I have a big problem that might make me return the mic. It cuts off the wifi connection in my house. No one at home can be on the internet wirelessly when my microphone is on.
It thoght it wasn’t supposed to interfere with anything. I use an Apple Time capsule wireless router (2.4 ghz) that is in my basement. My V70 mic is connected upstairs on the main level. Usually when I sing, I am reading the lyrics from the net on my ipad wirelessly. Now I cant do that anymore. There was nothing mentioned about interference in the instruction manual of the V70 but when I went on their online ‘advanced instructions’ there was a whole section on how it might interfere with wireless networks etc. and they recommend moving the equipment which is not practical for me. Please help if you know something that I don’t. I would have preferred knowing all these problems before I bought the unit.
        Thanks in advance.

        Mike

Hey Mike, i recently purchased 3 XD-V30s 2 Handhelds and a lavalier. When i play a single note the signal drops out 1 or 2 seconds after the initial attack. My wireless computer is in the same room.Could this be affecting my signal? What happens with yours? Ki

        • http://www.ryansloan.net Ryan Sloan

Hey Mike, sorry about the delay. I must have missed this. The key thing I mention in the article is that the actual microphone signal won’t have issues working within close proximity to a wi-fi router. It is possible that your actual router may experience some interference. However, it’s pretty easy to fix just by adjusting the channel you’re using.

The Line 6 site has a guide you can use to determine which channel to set your router on as well as the wireless microphones and your problem will be taken care of.

    • BlackBurst

I’ve ordered mine and await it eagerly within a few days. I’m a professional PA-provider, and I’m puzzled why Line6 are hiding the information about the ability to physically change capsules away in paragraphs deep down in the texts. This is for me the big one – this is what we’ve been waiting for! ….(if it works, that is! :o ))
